Changes to the MOT Test

The way that the MOT test works in England, Scotland and Wales changed in 2018 and affected cars, vans, motorcycles and other light passenger vehicles. To bring the MOT test in line with EU Directive 2014/45, changes were made to the content of the MOT, although the basic essence the MOT stayed the same. However, the defect categories that vehicles pass and fail the MOT test for were extended. There are now three defect categories; dangerous, major and minor.

For dangerous and major defects your vehicle will fail the MOT Test. For minor defects your vehicle won’t fail and instead you will be issued with an advisory notice for those components that aren’t yet defective but are wearing out. So, it has never been more important to have your vehicle properly serviced before you present it for its MOT.

There are now also stricter limits for emissions from diesel cars with a diesel particulate filter. If your car is emitting smoke of any colour from the exhaust, or your diesel particulate filter is not as per the manufacturer’s original specification, your vehicle will register a major fault and will fail the MOT Test. So, a pre-MOT Test service has never been more important.
