Shock Absorbers – when did you last check yours?
As our roads become ever-more littered with pot holes, it has never been more important to check your shock absorbers, to make sure they are in good working order and your car is safe on the road.
An important part of your suspension, shock absorbers do what their name suggests: they absorb shocks from bumps, potholes and other road defects to help keep your tyres in contact with the ground at all times. This also provides a comfortable driving experience for you and your passengers.
If your car vibrates or clonks while driving or tends to drift to one side while braking, you could have problems with your shock absorbers and need to get them checked as soon as possible. If you have to constantly correct your car’s steering in mild wind conditions, this can also be a sign of worn shock absorbers delivering reduced control to the driver. These issues could relate to something simple like general wear and tear, or could be a symptom of a ruptured seal or leak within the shock absorber itself.
Worn shock absorbers can also increase your stopping distance by up to 20%. This 20% extra stopping distance can be enough to cause an accident and is a sure sign of when to replace shock absorbers.
Checking Your Shock Absorbers
- Take your car to an empty car park. See what happens when you continually accelerate and brake. If your vehicle continues to bob up and down even after you have come to a complete stop from a slow speed, it may be time to change your shocks.
- You can also check your car’s bounce by pushing down on the bumper. If it takes it several bounces to return to its initial position, your shock absorbers may be weak.
- Park the car on a level surface and examine the car from the front and rear. If you notice your car isn’t level, it can mean something is off with your suspension and shocks.
- Check to see if there are any loose bolts, which may make a rattling noise when you’re driving. Loose bolts can also mean something is off with your shocks.
- Examine your shock absorber tubes to see if they’re leaking any oil. This can also indicate bigger issues with your car’s shock absorbers.
Can I fix shock absorbers myself?
According to the RAC, While it might be possible to repair faulty shock absorbers, mechanics recommend replacing all four at once to ensure your vehicle maintains the right balance.
Shock absorbers should only be replaced by competent technicians at professional repair centres or garages. They are normally fitted in pairs to ensure equal handling characteristics.
