Preparing Your Car For Icy Conditions
Ice and snow can make driving conditions extremely challenging. It is therefore important to prepare yourself properly before setting off in your car at this time of year.
According to the RAC the quick winter driving checks required before setting off are: Fuel, Oil, Rubber, Coolant, Electrics and Screen Wash.
Fuel – Check you have plenty of fuel in your tank for your journey and remember, your car is likely to use more fuel during the winter.
Oil – check your oil level is between the minimum and maximum mark on your car’s dipstick and top up if necessary.
Rubber – check your tyres and your wiper blades before you set off. Although the minimum tread level is 1.6mm, during winter it’s advisable to have 3mm of tread on your tyres to help with traction and grip. Also ensure that you have the correct pressure in your tyres – check your owner’s handbook for the correct inflation levels. Make sure to check your wiper blades for cracks and splits and replace if required.
Coolant – check your coolant levels when the engine is cold and look in your handbook for the correct coolant and mix to use should you need to top it up.
Electrics – when your car’s engine is cold, check the battery terminals are clean. Also check your lights to make sure they are all working correctly.
Screen Wash – it is important to make sure your screen wash is topped up with a quality screen wash additive or pre-mixed screen wash which is effective down to at least -15 degrees celcius.

Clearing snow and ice from your car
Common sense dictates that you should clear all ice and snow from you car before setting off, but what many people do not realise is that the Highway Code stipulates that if driving in adverse weather conditions you must, by law, be able to see out of every glass panel in your vehicle.
This is supported by the section 41D of the Road Traffic Act 1988, meaning it is a legal requirement to have a clear view of the road ahead before you set off. Failure to do so could incur a fine, but more importantly could place your life, the lives of your passengers and the lives of those around you in danger.
Carry spare waterproof and warm clothing
In case the worst should happen and your car does break down, or you suffer a puncture, always carry spare waterproof and warm clothing in the boot of your car. It could be some time before the breakdown services arrive with you, so keeping dry and warm is a priority in cold and icy conditions. It is also advisable to carry a torch, in care you break down on a dark or unlit road.
